ABOUT THE PRESENTERS

“DISTRACTIBILITY is NOT THE SAME as having NO ATTENTION SPAN.”

These are the words of Rick Lavoie, who, in 2009, was the recipient of the nation’s Learning Disabilities Association award. He has delivered his message to over 500,000 parents and professionals throughout North America, Australia, New Zealand and Hong Kong. He has the distinction of having delivered Keynote Addresses for all three of the major special needs advocacy organizations in the United States (Learning Disabilities Association, Council for Exceptional Children, and Children with Attention Deficit Disorder).

Rick Lavoie’s Keynote, “Tales of the Road,” ties his 30 years in education with a philosophy to why and what we should/should not do with kids.

Dr. Jeffrey Krukar, Ph.D., is a licensed psychologist with 20 years experience working in human services and a licensed school psychologist currently working at the Oconomowoc Developmental Training Center. Dr.Krukar is also a certified Collaborative Problem Solving trainer through Think:Kids in Boston and has been involved in the development of the ICARE program, which promotes the understanding that challenging kids lack the skill, not the will, to behave well – speci?cally skills related to problem solving, flexibility and frustration tolerance. It focuses on teaching at-risk kids the skills they need to succeed. The workshop uses a combination of power point, small group exercise, and review of some video clips to deliver skills you can use in the classroom with challenging students.

DR. AMY LEVENTHAL, Ph.D., is a licensed Psychologist and RDI® Program Certified Consultant. She is currently consulting with Downtown Montessori in Milwaukee regarding a child with ASD who attends their school. Her workshop “Autism Spectrum Disorders and the Montessori Classroom: Guidelines for Optimizing Learning,” is an interactive presentation which will increase your understanding of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and what it means for learning in the classroom. You will receive practical strategies as well as a global framework that you will be able to apply in your classroom. An emphasis will be placed on engaging children with ASD in learning within a Montessori context and approach with the aim to help each child be an optimal learner and community participant.

Dr. Joyce Pickering has devoted her entire career to helping any student with a learning difference with an all inclusive approach in order to find the best individualized educational path for the student. Her work has been published in many educational journals and she has been honored by countless professional associations. Since 1960 as a speech pathologist, her contributions to society have been numerous, some of which include: she founded the first public school class for the deaf and aphasic in Mississippi and received a White House citation for it; served as Director of the Early Childhood Ed. program in Natchez, Ms, which was named one of the top ten by the US Office of Ed. in 1970; co-founded the Brazilian Dyslexia Foundation; and from 1990-2010, was the Executive Director, CEO and President of the Board of the Shelton School in Texas, which provides training and support to public and private schools through presentations, in services, workshops, on-line courses, and courses offering graduate school credit; and was nominated for the AMS Living Legacy award in 2010. Her workshop, “Classroom Management for the Learning-Different Child,” will give teachers ideas for aiding each child’s developmental level to meet their full potential.

Turn left and go 2.8 miles to Chula Vista. From Wausau: Follow 139 S to exit 100 for Hwy 23. Take 23 past Briggsville for 15 miles. When reach intersections of 16 , 23, and 13, take a right on 13N for 2.8 miles. Chula Vista is on your left.
